Surya सूर्य — God of the Sun

Surya
Mosaic of the Morning
Some say the sun is one great fire, grandchild. The mosaic-makers know better. Look closely — he is a million little fires, a million tiles of gold, every house and every window catching its own piece of him. That is how he reaches everyone at once. He does not pick favourites. The palace and the mud yard both wake in the same light. His lotuses are in his hands. The seven horses run beneath. The dawn charioteer Aruna keeps the pace. Even his armour is a sun, set with little suns. He is the morning broken kindly into pieces.

Lotuses Open at His Hand
Long ago, child, the old ones noticed something quiet. The lotuses close their petals at dusk and open again at first light. No bell rings. No one tells them. They simply know when the sun is coming, and they bow back to him in colour. Look — here Surya holds two of them, one in each raised hand, and you can see them open as he passes. This is why we say he is the gentlest king. He does not order the flowers. He does not need to. They simply remember him. May we be as faithful as the lotuses.

The Witness Altar
Before the temple wakes, child, the altar is already alive. The white horse waits — first of the seven, his eye burning quietly like the dawn. The bronze chakra spins the days into weeks, the weeks into years. The conch lies ready for the morning call. Below them sits the Sri Yantra of the goddess and the sun together, the geometry behind everything that grows. Mala beads coiled. Petals fallen overnight. No one is here yet. But everything is in place. The sun is on his way. He has never once been late.

King of the Bougainvillea Court
Sometimes, grandchild, the sun comes to court in his bright red and gold, and the whole garden blooms to meet him. Look how the bougainvillea has burst into flower wherever his foot falls. The seven horses wait below, his charioteer beside them. In each hand a lotus, opening as he passes. The temple city behind him shines — not because of its gold, but because his light has reached it. There is no morning that he forgets. Even on the days when nobody looks up, he comes the same way. That is the kindness of kings.

Arghya at the River
Before the day begins, child, the river already knows. Look — the people stand waist-deep in the cold water of the ghats, hands cupped, lifting the river up toward the great mandala in the sky. This is arghya, the oldest offering. Older than the temples behind them. Older than the words they speak. You pour water back to the water, you lift the river toward the sun, and you remember that everything that warms you and feeds you came as a gift first. The grandmothers know. The river knows. Now you know too.
