While Shiva sits in the mountains and lets things end, Vishnu walks the world and keeps them going. Here he stands at the edge of the cosmic ocean, conch in hand, the great serpent at his feet and a city of light behind him. His work is the quiet one: preservation, the holding-together, the showing-up again and again. Wherever the world is worth saving, he comes back.
