Yama यम — God of Death and Justice

Yama
Throne of Golden Justice
Some say Yama lives only in the south, in a far palace beyond the horizon. The mosaic-makers know better, grandchild. Look — every gold tile is a household, every patterned dome is a doorway. He rides Mahisha through all of them. At his shoulder the moustachioed scribe Chitragupta keeps the running tally, his face kind and watchful. The danda is raised but never struck without cause. This is the throne of golden justice — set not in a far country, but in the quiet middle of every life. Even ours, right now.

The Southern Court in Gold and Jewels
In the old Tanjore manner, child, we frame the holy ones in jewels — rubies for courage, emeralds for the green of growing things, gold for the sun that watches all. Here is Yama as the painters of the south remembered him: dark as monsoon cloud, beard like rain-water, the twin maces of dharma steady in his hands. Mahisha rests below, his horns wrapped in gold. Chitragupta sits beside him, palm-leaf and quill ready. This is the southern court. Every road leads to it in the end. The kind ones arrive unafraid.

Dharma's Bright Dance
Not every face of Yama is grave, little one. Look — here he moves through the bright clouds with the palm-leaf manuscripts of dharma in his hand, the golden danda dancing with him. This is Yama in colour: the keeper of the world's tune. Without him the harvest would not come in its season, the river would not return to its bank, the child would not grow into the elder. He is not only the end of the song. He is the rhythm that lets the song be sung at all. Dance lightly, then. He is watching kindly.

The Ledger of Days
There is a book, grandchild — older than the mountains, longer than any river. Chitragupta begins writing in it from the moment your first breath touches the air. Every kindness, every cruelty, every small choice you thought no one saw. When the time comes, Yama opens it. He does not raise his voice. He does not need to. He simply reads, and you hear it in your own heart. That is why the old ones taught us to be kind on quiet days — because every quiet day is written down, and the writing is in gold.

The Witness Yantra
This is the altar of the silent witness, little one. No king sits here, only the things that always tell the truth. The dark buffalo Mahisha, who has carried every soul. The brass scales that have never tipped for a clever word. The danda crowned with the bone all of us share. The yantra above — that geometry behind the world, the quiet order Yama keeps. The ledger waits open. The candles burn low. In the stillness between breaths, this is where dharma is weighed. Live so that the weighing leaves you light, child.

Dharmaraja Holds Court
Sit a while, grandchild, and look upon the King of Dharma on his throne of jewels. In one hand the danda, the rod of righteousness, crowned by the bone that reminds every kingdom of its end. In the other the pasha, the gentle noose that draws each soul home when the time is right. Mahisha the buffalo waits beside him, patient as the mountains. Beyond, the southern city of his palace shines through the wisteria. They call him stern — but look at his eyes. He is only the one who keeps the promise: that the good of this world is not forgotten.

The Threshold Where Names Are Read
Yama is no stranger, child. He is the calm man at the gate, the one who has been waiting all along. When the time comes he does not hurry you, does not chase. He simply stands at the threshold of the southern road, his great black buffalo breathing beside him, and reads your name from the book. Every soul who has ever walked the earth has met him here. He is not cruel and he is not kind. He is fair. That is the gift he gives us — a world where the scales still balance, and every quiet kindness is remembered.
